What Is On-Page SEO?

On-page SEO is the practice of optimising the content and HTML of a web page so search engines and people understand it and find it useful. It covers search intent, title tags, meta descriptions, headings, content quality, URLs, images and alt text, internal links and structured data. It works best alongside technical SEO and off-page SEO, and clear, well-structured pages are also easier for AI search to use.

1. Keyword Research and Search Intent

On-page SEO starts by matching a page to what the searcher actually wants. Pick one main keyword per page, plus related phrases, and check what already ranks.

  • Informational: "what is on-page SEO". Answer it directly with a guide.
  • Commercial or local: "SEO course in Coimbatore". Show syllabus, fees, location, proof and a clear way to enquire.
  • Navigational: a brand or tool name. Make the right page easy to find.
  • Open the top results for your keyword. If they are all guides and yours is a sales page, the intent does not match.
  • Use Google Keyword Planner, Search Console queries, "People also ask" and autocomplete for ideas. Do not target one keyword with several pages, because they compete with each other.

2. Title Tags

The title tag is the clickable headline in search results and one of the strongest on-page signals. Google may rewrite it, but a clear title gives it a good base.

<title>SEO Course in Coimbatore | 2-Month Training with Placement Support</title>
  • Put the main keyword near the start and keep titles to roughly 50 to 60 characters so they are less likely to be cut off.
  • Make every title unique and written for people, not stuffed with keywords.
  • Add the brand at the end where it fits.
  • Avoid vague titles such as "Home" or "Untitled".

3. Meta Descriptions

The meta description is the summary under the title in search results. It is not a direct ranking factor, but a good one can raise clicks.

<meta name="description" content="Learn SEO in Coimbatore with live projects, Search Console practice and placement support. Visit our Gandhipuram centre or call for batch dates.">
  • Aim for about 120 to 160 characters, and write a clear promise plus a reason to click.
  • Include the main keyword naturally. Google bolds matching words.
  • Write a different description for every page. Google may show its own snippet instead if it matches the query better.

4. Headings: H1 to H6

Headings give a page its outline for readers, screen readers and search engines.

<h1>On-Page SEO Guide</h1>
  <h2>Title Tags</h2>
  <h2>Headings</h2>
    <h3>Heading order</h3>
  • Use one clear H1 that says what the page is about.
  • Use H2s for main sections and H3s for sub-points, without skipping levels for styling.
  • Write headings as the questions people ask, and answer in the first sentence below.
  • Do not use headings only to make text bigger. Use CSS for that.

5. URLs and Slugs

A good URL is short, readable and describes the page.

Good: /seo-course-in-coimbatore.php
Weak: /page?id=48&ref=x
  • Use lowercase words separated by hyphens, and include the main keyword.
  • Avoid dates, session IDs and long parameters in the URL.
  • Do not change a live URL without a 301 redirect, and update internal links afterwards.

6. Content Quality and E-E-A-T

Google's systems aim to reward helpful, reliable, people-first content. E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. It is a quality framework rather than a single ranking factor.

  • Answer the main question clearly near the top, then add depth, examples and steps.
  • Show real experience: your own projects, screenshots, student results you can document, and named authors.
  • Keep facts accurate and dated, and update pages when things change.
  • Avoid thin, copied or mass-produced pages. Writing 30 near-identical location pages hurts more than it helps.
  • Cover the topic fully without padding. Length is not a goal; completeness is.

7. Images, Alt Text and Media

Alt text describes an image for people who cannot see it and helps search engines understand it.

<img src="seo-class-coimbatore.webp" alt="Students practising an SEO audit in a Gandhipuram classroom" width="800" height="500" loading="lazy">
  • Describe what the image shows in plain words. Do not stuff keywords.
  • Use descriptive file names, modern formats such as WebP, and compressed sizes.
  • Set width and height to avoid layout shift, and lazy-load images below the fold but not the main hero image.
  • Add captions or transcripts for videos where they help.

9. Structured Data on the Page

Structured data labels the page's content so search engines can read it more reliably. It is not a direct ranking factor, but it supports rich results and entity understanding.

  • Add Breadcrumb, Article, Course, LocalBusiness or FAQPage markup that matches visible content.
  • Validate with the Rich Results Test before publishing.
  • Do not mark up reviews or ratings you cannot show on the page. See the schema markup guide.

10. Readability and Page Experience

Pages that are easy to read and use keep visitors engaged.

  • Use short paragraphs, bullet lists, tables for comparisons and a clear table of contents on long pages.
  • Keep text readable on mobile, with enough contrast and tap-friendly buttons.
  • Make the next step obvious: a call button, enquiry form or WhatsApp link.
  • Fast loading and stable layouts matter, and are covered in the Core Web Vitals section of our Technical SEO Guide.

11. Local On-Page SEO

For a local business, the page should make the location and service obvious.

  • Show your business name, address and phone number the same way everywhere, in text rather than only in an image.
  • Mention the city and area naturally in the title, H1, intro and FAQs.
  • Embed a map and add directions and landmarks that are true and useful.
  • Create separate area pages only when each has genuinely different information. See our Local SEO course.

12. On-Page SEO for AI Search (AEO and GEO)

AI answers favour pages that state clear, accurate answers in plain text.

  • Start a section with a direct one or two sentence answer, then explain.
  • Use question-style headings, short lists, tables and a visible FAQ.
  • Name your entities clearly: business, people, places, courses and tools, and keep details consistent across pages.
  • Cite or mention sources for facts, and keep the date updated.
  • No tactic guarantees inclusion in AI answers. Learn more in the AI Digital Marketing course and the AEO and GEO guide.

  3. Check there is one H1 and a clean heading outline.
  4. Put a direct answer near the top of the page.
  5. Improve the body: add examples, steps, tables and sources.
  6. Shorten and clean the URL if needed (redirect the old one).
  7. Add alt text and compress images.
  8. Add internal links to and from the pillar and related pages.
  9. Add and validate schema that matches the page.
  10. Publish, request indexing in Search Console, then review clicks and queries after a few weeks.

Common On-Page SEO Mistakes

  • Targeting the same keyword on many pages.
  • Stuffing keywords into titles, headings and text.
  • Using the same title or description everywhere.
  • Hiding text or using many H1s for styling.
  • Copying content from competitors or using unedited AI text.
  • Leaving images without alt text.
  • Using "click here" as link text.
  • Forgetting the next step: no phone, form or WhatsApp button.

On-Page SEO Questions Answered

23 direct answers about titles, headings, content, images, links and AI search

On-page SEO is the work of optimising the content and HTML of a page so search engines and people understand it: titles, descriptions, headings, content, URLs, images, internal links and schema.

On-page SEO covers what is on the page, off-page SEO covers links and mentions from other sites, and technical SEO covers crawling, indexing, speed and site infrastructure. They work together.

Content that matches search intent, a clear title tag, good headings, internal links, fast mobile-friendly pages and trustworthy, accurate information.

There is no exact limit, but around 50 to 60 characters usually displays fully. Put the main keyword near the start and write for people.

About 120 to 160 characters is a good guide. It does not directly affect rankings, but it can affect clicks. Google may rewrite it.

Use one clear H1 per page. HTML allows more, but one keeps the outline simple for readers and tools.

Search intent is the reason behind a search: to learn, compare, buy or find a place. Your page should match it, otherwise it is unlikely to rank well.

There is no ideal density. Use the main keyword naturally in the title, H1, intro and where it fits, and cover related terms. Stuffing hurts readability.

It happens when several pages target the same keyword and compete with each other. Merge them, or give each a clearly different purpose.

Alt text describes an image in words. It helps visually impaired users and helps search engines understand images, which can bring image search traffic.

A short, lowercase, hyphenated URL that describes the page, such as /seo-course-in-coimbatore.php. Avoid long parameters and do not change URLs without a 301 redirect.

E-E-A-T means experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. It is a framework in Google's quality guidelines, not a single ranking score. Show real authors, evidence and accurate facts.

Yes. They help search engines discover pages and understand relationships, and they help visitors find related content. Use descriptive anchor text.

It is not a direct ranking factor, but it can make pages eligible for rich results and helps machines understand the page. Mark up only what is visible.

Mention the city and area naturally, show consistent name, address and phone, embed a map, add genuine local details and FAQs, and use LocalBusiness schema.

Give a direct answer first, use clear headings, lists and tables, name entities consistently and keep facts accurate and dated. No method guarantees an AI mention. See the AI Digital Marketing course.

Google does not penalise content for being AI-assisted. It rewards helpful, accurate content. Unedited, generic or mass-produced text performs poorly, so add real expertise and review everything.

Review important pages every few months and whenever facts, prices or dates change. Update the visible date only when you have made a real change.

Google Search Console, Google Keyword Planner, Screaming Frog, Yoast or Rank Math for WordPress, PageSpeed Insights and the Rich Results Test.

Google must recrawl the page first, which can take days to weeks. Ranking changes often take a few weeks or longer, and depend on competition. Nobody can promise a timeline.

Basic HTML helps, such as title, meta, heading and link tags, but you do not need to be a developer. The course teaches the HTML you need.

No. On-page work improves relevance and clarity, but rankings also depend on competition, links, technical health and user satisfaction. Be careful of anyone who guarantees a ranking.
